Relax at sea en route up the north-east coast of Caithness to Orkney. In the lively capital of Kirkwall, admire the impressive interior of 12th century St Magnus Cathedral, known as 'The Light of the North', dominating the skyline since its foundation.

From World War II history at the Churchill Barriers and the ornate Italian Chapel, step into ancient history at Skara Brae, Orkney's finest Neolithic settlement. Enjoy a warm welcome on Fair Isle, synonymous with knitting, enjoying a craft demonstration, followed by walks to the new Fair Isle Bird Observatory Trust Observatory.

Heading north for the otter and bird haven of Yell by Burravoe harbour, visit the white-harled Old Haa Museum, erected by local merchants. Lunna Voe on Mainland is renowned as the base of the World War II 'Shetland Bus' Norwegian Resistance operation from Lunna House, with Lunna Kirk, Shetland's oldest church, nearby.

After a morning tour to Scalloway, wonder at the millennia of history uncovered at Jarlshof by a violent storm in the late 19th century. South from Lerwick Hebridean Princess cruises to the lush Orcadian beauty of Sanday or Stronsay. Returning to Caithness, if His Royal Highness is not in residence, delight in a special tour of the late Queen Mother's home at Castle of Mey, set in inspirational gardens. From Helmsdale, stately Dunrobin Castle, with its rare fusion of styles, is our final gem.
